Final European report 'Access of young people to culture' published by Interarts
11 August 2010
The final European report 'Access of young people to culture' has just been published by Interarts.
The report was commissioned by The European Commission and it aimed to answer the following main questions:
- In what areas have actions been taken which aim to foster young people’s access to culture?
- What are the relevant practices carried out by national authorities and other principle players (NGOs, local communities, associations) in the different Member States?
- What are the main obstacles that hinder young people’s access to and participation in culture?
The study focuses on examples and practices from different sectors across Europe. These include financial incentives to encourage cultural consumption, projects using new technologies and projects engaging young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in culture.
Amongst other things the report illustrates the need to build bridges between school, family, youth workers and the local community, as well as the need to develop links with those in charge of youth, culture, education, family and social affairs. In addition it suggests strategies to be developed at all levels of governance.
It highlights how youth access to culture is at its highest when the following factors are present:
- Economic catalysts for cultural consumption;
- Cultural institutions and young creativity;
- Connections with heritage and community;
- Mobility and cooperation;
- Interdisciplinary cultural / art forms and expressions;
- Engagement of young people from diverse backgrounds;
- Art and creativity in education;
- New technologies;
- Young people as cultural producers and consumers.
